Wakinga Community Water Project
Wakinga Community Water Project is driven by the belief that clean water is life. It was created by Angela Yuan, an American student, partnering with the Sagrema Foundation and "Uzima" Filters. It was funded through friends, family and a grant to provide clean drinking water for free to everyone on Mfangano Island; the filters provided to the community should last for 10 years before they need to be replaced.
Lake water is pumped into two large tanks on a water tower and treated by an "Uzima" filter that eliminates all bacteria, protozoa, sediments and cysts, making the water safe to drink.
Lake Victoria is the dumping ground for three surrounding countries. It is contaminated by raw sewage, animal waste, toxic chemicals, micro plastic, and more. Furthermore, the lake is used daily for washing dishes and clothes, and for direct bathing.
It comes as no surprise that the water of the lake is not clean to drink and on top of the pollutants harbors many waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, dysentery and cholera. The Sagrema Foundation dedicates time to educating people on the dangers of both polluting water and using polluted water.
A submersible water pump was acquired with the help of donations. A power house was installed and power cables were put in place to connect the pump and the power house as well as all necessary electrical gadgets to drive the submersible water pump.
We accurately identified and built two 5,000L water tanks tower on a well raised point that supplies water to the community with sufficient gravity force.
In addition we successfully installed the first water kiosk, a point of water collection that serves up to 5,000 people a day. We still need extensions to make water available to many community members closer to their residential areas to avoid long distances walking in search of water.
It is for this reason that we still request for more support from donors, volunteers, well-wishers, NGOs and government relevant sectors to lend hand either financially or materially in support of the project's extension to achieve our objectives.
